F/A-18F Super Hornet Fighter Jet Crashes in Training Mission off USS Theodore Roosevelt

An F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet, assigned to the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), crashed into Philippine Sea while conducting routine flight operations, the Navy said.

The jet’s two aviators were able to eject before the crash and were immediately rescued by a helicopter assigned to the Navy’s Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 8 aboard the aircraft carrier. The jet was assigned to Carrier Air Wing 11 (CAW-11) and conducting routine pilot proficiency training when it crashed and is the incident is being investigated.

This is the second crash of a U.S. fighter aircraft this week.

On Monday, a U.S. Air Force F-15C Eagle fighter jet crashed into the North Sea off the coast of UK while on a routine training mission and killing the pilot. The deceased pilot was identified as 1st Lt. Kenneth Allen, the assistant chief of weapons and tactics for the USAF 48th Fighter Wing’s 493rd Fighter Squadron “The Grim Reapers” based at RAF Lakenheath, England.

June 8: A U.S. Air Force C-130H Hercules tactical airlifter overran the runway and crashed into a wall at Camp Taji Airbase, Iraq injuring four personnel.

June 8: The landing gear of a USAF F-35A Lightning II fighter aircraft collapsed after landing on the runway at Hill Air Force Base, Utah following a routine training flight.

May 30: A civilian De Havilland DHC-6-100 Twin Otter aircraft collided with a parked U.S. Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor aircraft at Brown Field Municipal Airport in San Diego with the MV-22B suffering millions of dollars worth damages.

May 19: A USAF F-35A Lightning II fighter aircraft crashed upon landing at Eglin AFB. Pilot was able to successfully eject from the aircraft.

May 15: A USAF F-22 Raptor stealth fighter aircraft crashed near Eglin Air Force Base in Florida while conducting a routine training flight. The pilot ejected safely from the aircraft before the crash.
