U.S. President Donald J. Trump issued a warning on Twitter to Iran amid Intelligence reports that suggest that they have been planning an assassination attempt on Lana Marks, the United States’ ambassador to South Africa.
The plot to assassinate the ambassador is allegedly in retaliation to the killing of the airstrike that killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani earlier this year in which Iran vowed to counter with measures that “will be 1,000 times greater in magnitude.”
U.S. officials told reporters at FOX News that they have been aware of threats against the ambassador since the spring, but intelligence suggests those threats have become more specific in recent weeks.
The intel community is taking the threat against the ambassador seriously and believe the Iranian regime potentially has the ability to act on an assassination plot. She is just one of several U.S. officials that American intelligence agencies believe Tehran is considering for retaliation for the killing of Soleimani. Iran has denied the reports.
Marks, 66, is a South African-born American handbag designer, became the US ambassador last year in October. She is popularly known for her eponymous fashion brand Lana Marks and also among the few women in Princess Diana’s inner circle.
Marks has also known President Donald Trump for over 20 years and is a member of his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. This is reportedly the primary reasoning behind the plot against her, as Tehran wants to personally hurt Trump for taking out their demigod in Soleimani.
