US Navy Vet Michael White Released by Iran After 2 Years Captivity

Navy veteran Michael White is on his way back to the United States after he was released from Iranian imprisonment, the Washington Examiner reported on Thursday.

White, who is recovering from the Corona Virus, was given a medical furlough in March when he was handed over to the Swiss Embassy in Tehran, the newspaper noted.

His mother, Joanne White, confirmed her son’s release in a Thursday statement. U.S. Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook traveled to Switzerland to accompany White back to the U.S.

“For the past 683 days my son, Michael, has been held hostage in Iran by the IRGC and I have been living a nightmare. I am blessed to announce that the nightmare is over, and my son is safely on his way home,” White said of her son’s release.

The family released a photo via Associated Press showing White for the first time, covered in personal protective gear.
